Activations in the motor cortex during the performance of linguistic tasks

Some theories of coverbal gesture claim that gesture is tied up with the processing of speech in a circuit that connects handedness with the specialisation for language. These claims were examined by looking at patterns of activation in various motor-related areas while subjects performed simple linguistic tasks. The results of an fMRI study clearly indicate that such motor-language connections exist, that they are task-specific and region-specific.
